Getting to Fuvahmulah (Gnaviyani Atoll) with Aqua Atoll

How Aqua Atoll books your domestic flight

  • We match your international arrival and departure times with the best domestic flights.
  • We keep a buffer so you have time for passport control, baggage collection, check-in and a quick coffee.
  • We coordinate your Malé airport meet & greet and escort you to the domestic terminal.
  • If your international flight is delayed, we liaise with the airline to re-protect your domestic sector whenever possible.
Baggage allowance for divers & surfers

Domestic baggage rules are slightly different from your international airline, especially when you travel with dive gear or surfboards. Maldivian treats these as high-volume baggage , with specific free allowances and per-kg fees for extra weight.

Type Typical free allowance* Extra weight
Hand luggage ~5–7 kg per person Must fit overhead / under seat.
Checked baggage ~20 kg standard, often up to 25 kg for divers Charged per kg when above your ticketed allowance.
Dive / surf gear bags Included in your checked total Counts as high-volume baggage; size limits and fees apply.

*Allowances can change based on ticket class, route, and airline policies. For the MLE–FVM sector, excess is usually charged per kg; some diver/surfer fares offer a special 25 kg free allowance plus discounted excess for gear.

Extra luggage & “extra seat” option

  • For very heavy or multiple surf/dive bags, the airline may require blocking an extra seat to safely carry gear.
  • In that case, the cost is usually similar to buying another passenger seat plus taxes; this can still be cheaper than shipping gear separately.
  • Aqua Atoll will check your gear weight list and advise if an extra seat is worthwhile for your group.

Tip for divers & surfers: pack your regulators, dive computer, and camera housing in hand luggage; keep weights and metal hardware in checked baggage.

RTL high-speed ferries to & from Fuvahmulah

The government-run Raajje Transport Link (RTL) high-speed ferries connect Fuvahmulah with neighbouring atolls in the south. This is a great option if you are combining Addu City, Gaafu Dhaalu or other southern islands with Fuvahmulah.

Route Typical travel time Notes
Fuvahmulah ⇄ Addu (Feydhoo / Hulhumeedhoo) ~ 90 minutes High-speed catamaran; scheduled several times per week.
Fuvahmulah ⇄ Gaafu Dhaalu Vaadhoo ~ 90 minutes Connects onwards to other Gaafu Dhaalu islands.

RTL schedules and ticket prices are managed by MTCC and updated often. We always cross-check the latest timetable via the RTL app or website before finalising your itinerary.

When to choose RTL instead of flying

  • You are already staying in Addu City or Gaafu Dhaalu and want a surface connection to Fuvahmulah.
  • You prefer a more budget-friendly transfer compared to an extra domestic flight sector.
  • You enjoy the idea of a scenic high-speed ride across the open ocean.

Travel day FAQs for Fuvahmulah

How early should I arrive for the domestic flight?
We recommend being at the domestic check-in counter at least 90 minutes before departure. If you’re landing from an international flight the same day, allow 3–3.5 hours between landing and your Fuvahmulah flight.
Can I travel with my own dive gear and surfboards?
Yes. Maldivian accepts properly packed dive gear and surfboards, but size and weight limits apply. Oversized bags may be charged as high-volume baggage or require an extra seat. Share your gear list with us and we’ll advise the best option.
What if my international flight is delayed?
If you book your domestic sectors through Aqua Atoll, we’ll monitor your arrival and help rebook the Malé–Fuvahmulah sector where possible. In some cases, an overnight in Malé / Hulhumalé is recommended to keep things stress-free.
